Nynorn word order

Thu Jan 26, 2012 2:46 am

Hej i got this idea.

Since Orkney norn dont have cases anymore like it use to have, it is most likely to be a word order language. So i suggest we use modern norwegian word order.

For shetland norn i suggest we use modern icelandic or fareose word order.

In my experience with icelandic, faroese and old norse. I have not yet mastere the case system and all the rules, so often when i read old norse i get confused when i dont know why this cases is used and what it then means.

But i rarely get this problem in icelandic, because the word order seems very scandinavian to me. With faroese and icelandic, the word order often tells me what the cases dont.

So by using icelandic / faroese word order for shetland, and norwegian for orkney. I think they should be able to talk with each other =)

Yes, I think you're right, this is the way to go. The lack of cases in Orkney Nynorn must be compensated in syntax in one way or another.

There are differences in Faroese and Icelandic syntax, so you should stick to one. I don't know what the differences are exactly since I don't speak Icelandic. I can look into it though.

I don't see any major differences between the Icelandic and Faroese syntax, because both languages belong to the same grammatical type, more or less. Faroese has borrowed several features from the Danish word order, f.ex. there's a tendency to place adverbs or the negative word 'ikki' between the subject and the predicate in subordinate clauses while Icelandic prefers to use the normal word order:

Icel. Ég veit að hann er ekki heima.
Fær. Eg veit at hann ikki er heima.
'I know that he is not at home'
(of course there are exceptions from this rule in either language)

Faroese lacks genitive (at least as an active case), Icelandic is more eager to use possessive pronouns in post-position (often connecting them through an article: hesturinn minn 'my horse') and a few other small peculiarities. But in general it's more or less the same type.

Like Klüver I don't speak Icelandic, but I think that the cases where Icelandic and Faroese syntax is similar, are the same cases where Danish and Icelandic syntax are (also) similar

Icel. Ertu búinn? (are you ready?)
Fær. Ert tú klárur?
Dan. Er du klar?

Icel. Ertu að fara núna? (are you going/leaving now?)
Fær. Fert tú nú?
Dan. Går du nu?

You can say Ferðu/Ferð þú núna? in Icelandic as well as Ertu að fara núna?, where the former variant would refer to a determined action and the latter is less 'punctual', referring to something that is about to begin (continuous form). Like in English, the continuous form is becoming more dominating. However, Faroese is much closer to Old Norse in this respect, so that's what we have to stick to.

Actually, Faroese allows both those word orders, the latter just being more common.

Is the form hesturinn minn really possible? I use it often due to amalgam with Norwegian and my Icelandic teacher keeps correcting me saying the right structure is hestur minn...
