I am working on a English - Nynorn dictionary along with Hrafn and Lennart. The part I am compiling is the A to G words. The English words are from a list of the top 2500 English words. Progress has been very slow. Jakobsen's Etymological dictionary of the Norn Language is my main reference for Norn words but it is rather antiquated. It is a good reference for farming, fishing and weather terms but not so good for modern words such as automobile, airplane, computer etc. I am consulting other Nordic language dictionaries and word lists as well as Shetland dialect dictionaries. I need assistance with reviewing the possible word choices and converting the words to Nynorn.

As I view it, the best way for our dictionary to be written would be to do it as a database with crossed links between words and expressions apart from grammatical info.

Such a database would consist of several tables, one of them would have a list of Nynorn-English pairs (with separate entries for synonyms), the other would feature grammar information for respective Nynorn words, and the third one would contain specific expressions connected to them and their translation into English (another, forth table with English set expressions is also possible).

This database would allow us to generate both Nynorn-English and English-Nynorn dictionaries with just one click, making a simple database inquiry. In the former case it would pick up all translations, grammar data and expressions from the three tables for each given Nynorn word and generate a table with all that data. In the latter case it would look up Nynorn words from table 1 and, using them as entries, get grammar data and expressions from tables 2 and 3. That's just how databases work. It would allow us to do one job instead of two (eng-nrn and nrn-eng).

Another benefit from going this path is the fact that updates will go much easier than otherwise. You change a field in the database and then you automatically re-compile both dictionaries with the new data, again, with one click, instead of making changes to multiple letter pages. The making of dictionaries for other dialects, such as Orkney and Foula/Westside Nynorn would become automated as well.

What do our members think of this idea? Technically it will be an easy thing to do, just to type words into Access (or even Excel) tables.

The concept that you have outlined sounds like it would create a very good and usable dictionary. I like the idea of including Nynorn phrases with accompaning English translations. Could you create a template with a few Nynorn words, phrases and English translations. I am intersted in adding words to the tables but I am not sure about how to create the initial Excel tables.
