That's good to hear Do any of our Faroese members want to list the Shetland names with the Faroese forms alongside?. For me it would be fascinating to see the similarities. |

Oh, so I do, how did that happen? Wow, some of those names are very similar to Faroese. Ok, part two. Kverk - the corner where the throat joins the chin. Navers ben - the uppermost bone in the back. Bronga/Bringa/Pobi(?) - breast. Prummek - nipple. Glomeks - hands Løf - palm. Lor - thigh(of leg). Oh, and I'm writing these names just as they are spelled/written on the list. |

Thanks Ljun, this is fascinating!. I "knew" there might be a connection with a few of the names but to see how many and how close the Shetland and Faroese names are is fantastic. Okay, Mergi = Bone Marrow. Mergi Ben = Breast Bone. Mirri Ben = Funny Bone. Kept = Jaw Bone. Mogi = The Stomach. Pong = Testicles. Nir = Kidney. Bjonkels = Bunions. Blemmek = Blister, Blain. Bluemelt, Bloloppen = A Bruise. Bulki = A Humpback. Star = A Cataract(in eye). Nitrek = A lump on the skin, a wart. Gulsa = Jaundice. Nedfalsott = Epilepsy. Jarma = Heartburn. Robbi Rottl/Robbi Roitl = Diarrhoea. The End!. I might submit these words to the Shetland Words book. I'm not sure if the names should be split i.e Mergi Ben?. |

Shetland = English - Faroese Mergi = Bone Marrow. - Mergur Mergi Ben = Breast Bone. - Bringu-Bein Mirri Ben = Funny Bone. Alboga-Stoyts-Bein Kept = Jaw Bone. Kjálka-Bein / Kjaftur Mogi = The Stomach. - Magi Pong = Testicles. - Pungur Nir = Kidney. - Nýra Bjonkels = Bunions. - Svullur Blemmek = Blister, Blain. - Blæma Bluemelt, Bloloppen = A Bruise. - Melting / Blátt Merki Bulki = A Humpback. - Kúla Star = A Cataract(in eye). - Stari Nitrek = A lump on the skin, a wart. - Nitra / Finna Gulsa = Jaundice. - Gulsótt Nedfalsott = Epilepsy. - Niðurfalssótt Jarma = Heartburn. - Bróstsviði Robbi Rottl/Robbi Roitl = Diarrhoea. - Lívsýki / Leyst Lív Normally the words are not split in Norse spelling but I chose to do it in order to follow your pattern, e.g. 'Bringubein - Bringu-Bein' etc. However splitting the words can be an advantage when explaining the meaning, e.g. Nedfalsott Ned (Down) - Fall (Fall) - Sott (Disease) = Epilepsy; Bluemelt Blue (Blue) - Melt (Bruise) = (Blue-) Bruise. Note also that in the word 'Blue-melt' you have an English 'Blue-', while in 'Bloloppen' i.e. 'Blå-loppen' you have kept the Old Norn 'Blå-' pron. [:blo-] for 'Blue'. Blå (Blue) - Loppen (Caused??) = (Blue-) Bruise. |
