I'm Scott fae Shetland

I found this site when someone gave me a link from the Tyr.fo forums. As for what I would like. I would like to see a revival in our heritage that has been stolen from us

Hello Scott, you are heartedly welcome to our forum!
There's not so many people from Shetland on here apart from you, but hope there will be more, feel free to invite your friends to come over and join us too.

I've created a thread in Tingwall (our subforum for general discussions) where we can continue our talk on what people in Shetland think and know about Norn:

Takk all

Hopefully I will be able to drum up a few more people. I'll get set about it this weekend at Old Scatness whilst I am demonstarting Silver Smithing from the Norse period. Fingers crossed the weather holds out and the Siddy remains dry.

Overall I would love to see the re-emergance of my native language, even if it is only when I do the re-enactments but try I will

Hi ThorBorjn/Scott, it's great to see another Shetlander on here. I was feeling like a voice in the wilderness!.

I am feeling very low about the state of our heritage and identity. It's hard to desribe in words but our true (norse) heritage and identity has been errased and we are being forced to live in a "melting pot" of "nothing". And everything is about Scotland....

Have you read this month's Shetland Life?. The place-names article by Eileen Brook-Freeman(she is a Shetland woman married to an english man I think) was absolutely dreadful. And she is doing the place-names project for the Shetland Amenity Trust!!.

On a positive note, have you see the little book called "Shetland's Old Norse Personal Names"?. You can buy it from The Shetland Times and it's a book with lists of Shetland's old norse personal names and what they mean.

Very Happy

Hi Ugl

Although born a Shetlander and my Grandparents are Shetlanders and Orcadian I was raised in Scotland but taught to be proud of my islands and culture.

I do object to the kids being taught the Scottish wars of independence but nothing about the pawning or lack of legal clarity surrounding this. I have a feeling this will come to the fore the closer Scotland moves to breaking away. Fingers crossed the Shetlanders wake up and realise their history and true culture.

Yep seen the book keep meaning to buy it as my sons all have old names and only one is Gaelic the others are Norse and Tuetonic although his is also very norse sounding. Even the Dog has a norse name.

I will have a look at the Shetland Life. I do work for the amenity trust down at Old Scatness and go by the name of Hnoss Jewellery.
