Bibliu-orðalisti (Bible-wordlist)

About the wordlist

This wordlist is being updated as we go along creating new words or obtaining old Norn words in the process of writing these texts. For a more complete dictionary of the NewNorn language used here, please go to the Dictionary of Nynorn

Some words that are not to be found in that dictionary, might be found in the Hildina Ballad Wordlist , created by the undersigned a few years ago.

Abbreviations: Sh.Sc. = Shetland Scots (the Scottish dialect spoken in Shetland today, though many of these words of Norn origin were already obsolete when they were gathered into a dictionary in the 19'th century), Hildina = Hildina Ballad (the most complete text in the Norn language, recorded by George Low, a Scottish minister who visited the island of Foula in 1774) G.Low 1774 = other words (than the Hildina Ballad) recorded by G.Low in Foula in 1774. Other abbreviations: Arab. = Arabic, Dan. = Danish, Far. = Faroese, Greek = Greek, Hebr. = Hebrew, Icel. = Icelandic, Norw. = Norwegian, ON = Old Norse, Swe. = Swedish. W-F = Westide-Foula Nynorn.

Like in this Nynorn Sample Texts' wordlist, the reconstructed Nynorn neologisms based on original Norn words are marked with blue, and direct borrowings from other languages are in brown.
