matlo [matlo], sb., *maðkafluga a fly (the common fly, Musca domestica; the bluebottle, Musca vomitoria).

esp. the common fly. *mað- flo or *maðfluga? *maði, m. (from which O.N. maðkr, m., is derived), a maggot, and flo, f., an insect,
a flea, or fluga, f., a fly? Poss. rather bluebottle; cf. No. and Fær. makkafluga, f., bluebottle (prop. "maggotfly")• (maðkafluga)

*konnmerki [ko'n'mæ'rki, koii'-mæ'r'ki (kjij'-)], sb., a kind of cornworm (that creeps into the ears of corn, ruining them),
zabrus gibbus. Yh. *korn-maðkr, corn-worm. merki: derivative, with i-mutation, of older *mark, O.N. maðkr, m., maggot; worm. For the
change ðk > rk cf. No. and Sw. dial. mark = makk, m., maggot; worm (Sw. literary lang.: mask). Another Shetl. name for the said worm is oks-worm,
"ear (of cornfworm"; q.v.
